Ingredients

  • For the sponge cake:
    -5 eggs
    -½ cup or 120 grams sugar
    -1 cup flour or 150 grams
    -1 teaspoon baking powder

  • For the milk cream:
    – 700 ml Erzeni milk
    – 200 ml sweetened condensed milk
    – 3 tablespoons cornstarch

  • For the caramel:
    -2 cups sugar
    -2 cups water
    -2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions:

  • Beat the eggs with the sugar until a creamy mass is formed. Gradually add the flour with the baking powder, folding it from bottom to top with a spatula.

  • Spread the sponge cake batter in a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake for 30 minutes at 180-200 degrees Celsius.

  • Mix the three types of milk together as shown in the video. Once the sponge cake has cooled a bit, pour the milk mixture over it.

  • Meanwhile, prepare the caramel cream: Place 1 cup of sugar in a deep pan to caramelize. Once the sugar is caramelized, add the water, sugar, and cornstarch that you have mixed together. Cook over low heat, stirring quickly. Wait until the mixture thickens, about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  • Let it cool a bit and then pour it over the cake. Place it in the refrigerator for a few hours and consume it cold.

  • Tres Leches, a dessert with origins in Latin America, is based on sponge cake baked and soaked in three types of milk. Many Latin American countries claim to have invented this dessert, but Mexico is the country with the closest ties to its original recipe. Albania is believed to be the first country in the Balkans to adopt the Tres Leches recipe.

  • According to these data, the inspiration came from a Brazilian telenovela where the characters praised this unique dessert. The recipe adapted best to Albanian cuisine, and around the year 2014, it traveled to Turkey where it became widely popular.

  • In Turkey, newspapers had to write articles about the origin of Tres Leches because the people referred to it as “that Albanian dessert.
